Lazy blogger eats too many brownies …

Well, the title says it all really! I have been a very lazy blogger over the past 10 days, I have also been a very neglectful of my twittering and generally finding it virtually impossible to find any sort of inspiration for writing.  I have put my recent apathy down to the following:

1) The weather has changed and it got COLD here for a while. Rainy, grey days have only inspired me to sort out my biggest, baggiest jumpers, hunker down and keep as warm as possible, which I have discovered is pretty hard when your house is not water tight …

2) It came to my attention that my house is not water tight! The heavy rain has demonstrated how unsuitable to general living my house is and I have been dealing with mass flooding from every door and window frame my crappy house has … and the house is less than 2 years old! This has, however, inspired us to move and fingers crossed new accommodation has been found today!

3) The baby is teething BADLY and therefore is no longer sleeping through the night, add this to the fact the she never really adjusted to the clocks going back, making her new wake-up time 5.30AM, my sleep has been badly affected.

4) Due to prolonged dieting I have found myself permanently hungry, listless and unable to concentrate on anything other than chocolate. The most depressing thing about this is that I have hardly lost any weight😦

All of the above have left me slightly depressed and in need of severe cheering up … so I have turned to chocolate brownies and not just any old chocolate brownies, The BEST chocolate brownies I have ever tasted! (this could attribute to why I have hardly lost any weight!)

I may well be greedy but I am not selfish, so I have decided to share the amazing recipe for these brownies with the twittersphere … You may thank me later!

AMAZING CHOCOLATE BROWNIES:

Ingredients :                                                                                           Yield: 18

  • 75 g butter
  • 150 g sugar
  • 30 ml coffee
  • 170g dark chocolate (broken into pieces)
  • 170g milk chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 95 g all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
*In a heavy saucepan, bring the butter, sugar and coffee to the boil, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and stir in the dark chocolate until melted, cool slightly and then beat in the vanilla extract.
* In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs. Gradually add the chocolate mixture,       stirring constantly until mixed well.
* Combine and sieve the flour and baking soda, gradually adding this to the chocolate mixture.
* Stir in the milk chocolate chips.
* Spread the mixture into a greased and lined 8 x 8 baking pan.
* Bake at 170 degrees Celsius for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
*Cool on a wire rack, preferably overnight as the chocolate needs to set – They must set properly otherwise you will be tempted to put them back into the oven… resist this temptation (it may well be the only temptation you are able to resist with this recipe!)
*Frost accordingly and cut into bars ready to serve/demolish/stuff in your face!

Welcome to the house of Vom!

Well, this week the lurgy visited our house and struck down myself, the baby and even the dog (although I think the dog may have been faking it and only joined in with the puke fest as she felt a bit lacking in attention!)

My experience with the “sickness bug” started at 3am on Monday morning and I have to say it wiped me out completely. Thank-God the husband was home as he had to take over all household and baby duties and I was pretty much comatosed for 24 hours. I did have sole responsibility for the baby for a couple of hours on Monday morning, well when I say responsibility, all I was able to do was remove any obvious dangers, put “In the night garden” on a continuous loop and pray that she did not kill or maim herself in the brief time I had to watch her. I did break my “no dummy during the day” rule for this occasion and let her happily suck away whilst I concentrated on making it to the bathroom in time! Luckily she was fine and the Husband was home in time to give her lunch and put her down for a nap whilst I dragged my sorry arse back to bed for the rest of Monday. It took me until Wednesday to feel human again but I did managed to lose 3 kilo’s in 2 days (Whoop Whoop!)

In complete contrast the baby’s experience with the bug was  nothing like mine and she sailed through the whole thing with barley a whimper. She started vomiting at around 3pm on Wednesday afternoon, we were fortuitously playing outside when the first projectile struck and she decorated the patio in style (easily washed a way with the hose though, result!) I was very concerned with trying to contain her sick and ran around trying to find a suitable container, thrusting it under her chin whenever she starting heaving, only for her to either push it away or splash her hands in it after she was done. I do not know why I wasted so much energy with the sick catching exercise, as by the end of the evening she was happily puking directly into my lap and I was past caring at that point (You can imagine the pile of washing that is still waiting for my attention!) Far from languishing on the sofa, in between being sick, my daughter would happily dance away, stop for a little puke and then get back to her dancing like nothing had happened. I am pretty sure that  have behaved the same way after a few too many vodka’s🙂

I have to say I was very worried about dealing with a sick toddler, apart from the odd cold she has never been properly sick before and as I knew what to expect from the lurgy that had gripped our house, I was a little bit panicked when she started showing symptoms. I googled everything I could about sickness bugs in toddlers and posted on every baby site I was a member of on Facebook and got some very good advice, which I think it is only right to share. The most important thing is to stop them from getting dehydrated as it can occur very suddenly in infants and toddlers and become very serious, very quickly. In between vomiting I made sure that she had a drink of water and kept offering water to her when ever I could (she decided that she would only drink iced water out of the glass that I was currently using, but anyway to get it in her was fine by me!) I was advised by the health visitor that  if she was hungry to let her eat (she did have a piece of bread at about 7.30pm) and it was probably just a viral thing that had to run itself out of her system . If she had a temperature, to give paracetamol or ibuprofen for kids and if it continued for more than 48 hours,  get her checked out by a doctor. The other very useful advice she gave me was a homemade recipe for water with “electrolytes” to help with the dehydration and replace all the minerals she would lose from vomiting: Take 8oz of cooled, boiled water, add one teaspoon of sugar, a pinch of salt and shake well. I put her to bed with this mixture an hour after she had finished vomiting for the night and she slept for 12 hours solid, only waking to drink the water. This morning she was like a different child, eating well (I kept her on plain, easy to digest foods just in case) and showing no ill effects from her first encounter with a stomach bug!

I have to say I am very happy that she handled her first sickness bug so well, not least because tomorrow is her first fancy dress Halloween party and I am slightly over-excited by the whole thing … I have her costume ready and the party food is made, so expect my next post to be full of pictures of the “Halloween Queen” and there will also be an amazing Chocolate brownie recipe … I can tell you now they are AWESOME (the diet is going to take a bit of a battering tomorrow I can tell).

Diet desperation and Rama-Dumdum!

Although it is way too late in the year for lent and we are a couple of months past Ramadan, this week the husband, the baby and myself have all been giving up stuff! Myself and the husband have both been on diets, which for me means giving up chocolate, biscuits, chocolate-biscuits, snacking, finishing off the baby’s food, cakes, muffins and generally all the foods that I like the eat on a daily, sometimes hourly basis!

This diet has been LONG overdue and has been brought on after I had a good sort out of my wardrobe and I realised that there was only ONE pair of jeans that I could fit into … and they were not even mine! Having cruised through the summer wearing shorts and loose-fitting clothing, I can no longer keep kidding myself that “I have not gained that much weight” or “I have only just had a baby”! So 14 months and 7 kilo’s later I have woken up to the fact that my muffin tops have actually been caused by chocolate muffins and I really must stop eating them! As well as the above mentioned items, I have also decided to cut out carbs in the evenings. This week my nightly meals have consisted of grilled chicken with lots of vegetables and I am hoping that the bathroom scales appreciate the sacrifices I have been making and are accordingly nice to me on Monday (weigh in day). To be honest I have found it surprisingly easy not to eat carbs after dark, I know that it has only been 3 days but pasta and potatoes are the last thing from my mind … it is the chocolate deprivation that is killing me! This morning, I was cleaning out one of my kitchen drawers and I found a half eaten bar of Milka Hazelnut that had slipped through the junk purge and was currently hiding in a far corner of the drawer. The chocolate was rapidly confiscated by the husband, who very inconveniently for me was standing directly behind me when I found my forgotten “treasure”.  My Milka is now languishing in the bottom of the bin surrounded by dirty nappies and dog hair from the hoover but unbelievably this has not put me off the thought of liberating it from the bin and stuffing it in my mouth faster that you can say “Hairy chocolate”. I am staying strong for now and remembering my mantra of “The only person I am cheating is myself, The only person I am cheating is myself” … maybe it is time to empty the bin!

Never one to be left out, the baby has also been included in the week of deprivation and is currently under going dummy cold turkey, or the phase that I like to call “Rama-Dumdum”. She is now not allowed a dummy during daylight hours (with a small exception of her afternoon nap … that nap time is precious to me) and all 8 dummy’s are restricted to her bedroom. Part of the reason for Rama-Dumdum was that I realised that her speech was becoming seriously affected by the fact that she always had a dummy in her mouth and when I say seriously affected, she was not making any effort to create sounds but was quite happy just to make sucking and slurping noises expecting me to interpret what she wanted by the amount of drool hanging from her dummy! But all credit to her, she has done amazingly well and has not seemed to miss her dum-dum at all. The added surprise bonus has been that when bedtime rolls around and I announce that “It’s time for bed and your dummy’s are waiting for you in your cot,” upon hearing this she  runs to the baby gate,  practically high jumping any obstacles in her way, and starts shaking and pulling at the gate in her haste to get to her forbidden love. She is also more than happy to stay in bed for a good half an hour after she has woken up, getting a little bit more time of dummy love before cruel old Mummy wrestles it from her mouth again! Let’s hope that is now the end of constantly seeing a dummy in her mouth!

Hopefully the next time I blog I will be a few more kilo’s lighter and have lost a few dummy’s as well!

Loosing my cherry!

Hello Blogging World!

I have finally decided to loose my blogging virginity and create (with some trepidation) my first post! After 14 months of moving through life like a zombie, I am putting my time on the internet to good use and using what is left of my brain to document my daily struggles, triumphs and tantrums for the world to judge … but please do not judge me too harshly, as stated before I am still only half here🙂

So if you feel like reading about a stay at home Mum, living in Mallorca with a 14 month old daughter, a constantly shedding labrador, a cat that behaves strangely and a husband that works away a lot, then this is the blog for you!

I can assure you that future posts will be more interesting (and hopefully more humorous) than this first feeble attempt, so please bear with me whilst I rediscover a side of me that is not consumed with wiping up snot and sick!
